nightmares & death. devil's flying machine is the unlikely combination of roots musician charlie parr experimental musician christian mcshane, jazz percussionist david frankenfeld and dj jakob larson. you heard right. a dj.

it shouldn't work. but it does.

based largely on equal parts improvisation and gut reaction, devil's flying machine performs old-time music in the same fashion as the old-time musicians did. not with sheet music or the precise regurgitation of their music, but instead with unrestrained creation and reckless abandon - the way they would do it. the way they did do it. they didn't have anything to lose, and neither does Devil's Flying Machine.

somebody left the attic door wide open and now it's in your house.

Great show last night with
Pert Near Sandstone. Unleashed Jake on turntables. Yep, you heard right. We still need to come up with a name for him. So far, all we've come up with is "dj psoriasis". For some reason, he doesn't like it.

Sorry, it's been a long time. It's been cold. We been busy. Maybe we're just lazy. We've got a few new shows now that it's warmer. Hope to see you at the shows!

Shows have been a heap of fun and more are trickling in. Much thanks to Vinnie & the Barroom Standoff & Godevils for playing extraordinary sets at Pizza Luce. Thanks also to all involved with the Beacon to the Bayou concert. We're having a great time. So is the blow-up sheep. Thanks to all who come to our shows and watch us beat the crap out of our instruments.

Dave Frankenfeld has been added as as "rusted junk percussionist". He's reeeaal good. As in your cousin's rabid dog bitin' on your leg good. Took us a while. Shoes like that can't be filled by just anyone, you know.

Sweet Jesus. Show at the Norshor Theater with Trampled by Turles and Accident Clearing House. Never seen so many people in the norshor theater before.

The "actual debut" went well at the Red Lion in Duluth. Only two patrons had to be dragged out into the street. Joe Cunningham took photos which will be posted here soon.

10/10/04:
The tour-not-tour is going well. Ripped fingernails, bloody knuckles and long hours. Audiences have been receptive (frightened?). Devil's Flying Machine has enough recorded material, but they've decided not to rush the album. Instead,DFM will be recording as many live shows and field recordings as possible in order to release an album later this year. Perhaps the Dec 10 show? Perhaps earlier? One can never be sure. Thanks to all thus far who didn't run away while while DFM inflicted mayhem upon them.

DFM is still working the bugs out of the first tour-not-tour. 2 songs from a recent live show will be part of a forthcoming ep recorded extremely lo-fi by Jakob Larson. Plans are to release the ep at the Oct. 16 show.
